Full Review
The Proactiv Acne Solution is the most popular acne brand today, often promoted with TV commercials, other celebrities (with a mini pimple or two at most) endorsements, and their hyped up advertisements. Few acne sufferers don't know about this popular brand, so we decided to give our review and opinions on this acne treatment.
Proactiv mainly works for people who suffer from mild to moderate acne for a short period of time. It uses the chemical benzoyl peroxide, which serves to kill off the acne-causing bacteria. They also use salicylic acid, which unclogs pores and allows sebum to flow out of the skin. They give you an acne wash, an exfoliant, and benzoyl peroxide in their acne kit. But, Proactiv has been known to initially help treat acne, not permanently treat acne. That's why this product was never given a high ranking.
Why does Proactiv only initially treat acne? Benzoyl peroxide is like a "drug." You start with a low concentration, normally 2.5%, and you work your way up to 5% - 10 % as lower concentrations of this chemical stop working. Normally, 10% will stop working, but it's unsafe to go to a higher concentration.
Overall, Proactiv is a good starter acne treatment, however there are many cheaper and better alternatives to this product.
Positive Qualities
- One of the first 3-step acne treatments that ever existed. Great for those who suffer from a couple pimples here and there.
Negative Qualities
- If used too long, chemicals in the acne treatment often damage the skin.
- Expensive, and may cause an initial breakout. Uses skin irritants.
